Why Do Dogs Dig?

Like chewing and barking, digging is a natural tendency in the canine world. Though natural, this can be a very problematic behavior when it is directed towards your yard or even your home. Dogs dig for a variety of reasons including:

  • Seeking
  • Entertainment (i.e. in self-play)
  • Prey
  • Comfort and protection
  • Escape (under a fence)
  • Attention

It can be important to identify with your trainer the cause(s) of your dog’s digging in order to determine the best way to eliminate this behavior. For example, if a dog digs only in your presence, they may need more attention. On the other hand, some dogs such as terriers dig because it is what they have been bred to do. These dogs may need to develop other outlets for their energy.

In other cases, a dog may dig as an attempt to escape, in which case modifying your fencing may help to curb this behavior when combined with behavioral modification. Usually, a combination of strategies is necessary to eliminate unwanted digging.

Again, the best way to solve problematic digging and avoid the cost of an escaped dog or torn up vegetable garden is to seek the help of a canine training expert. Contact Absolute K9 today for a free evaluation and to learn more about how to stop unwanted and destructive digging.
