Destructive Chewing

It is natural for a dog to explore the world through their mouths. However, it is important for a dog to learn what is okay and not okay to chew on. Destructive chewing often develops when dogs choose items belonging to the owner, including shoes, clothes, furniture, landscape and sometimes even toxic chemicals! In many cases destructive chewing is the result of boredom, play or social isolation. Puppies without an adequate outlet for their natural chewing and teething needs may become destructive chewers.

Dogs that are left alone for long stretches and those without enough toys, chews, and playmates may also develop this troublesome behavior. More active dogs are also prone to destructive chewing. It is important to teach your dog what is and is not okay to chew, with consistency and patience.

Good Owner Tip: Provide your dog with enough of their own “toys” so that they do not feel the need to direct this natural tendency toward your beloved possessions.

Destructive chewing can be a challenge for some owners to remedy by themselves. At Absolute K-9 we understand that day to day life can be so busy and that there may not be time for training. We’ve heard the stories of a dog owner’s keys hitting the front door lock and they think “now what did he chew up today??
If you’re tired of having shoes, drapes, couches, speaker wires (yup!) or other parts of your home chomped on while you away, contact Absolute K-9 by email or phone and tell us about your dogs chewing story.

“Investing in professional canine training is the single most responsible thing you can do for your dog and your family.”
