Is Your Dog a Surf Dog?

dogsurfHave you ever gone surfing with your dog? It may be time to try it out because humans aren’t the only ones who enjoy a good wave, man’s best friend too, can hang ten. This Saturday, May 22, 2010 dozens of dogs from around the country will prove it when they compete in the 5th annual Surf Dog Competition.

The competition will be held at the Loews Coronado Bay Resort here in San Diego. Practice sessions will begin at 10am followed by the competition itself at 11am. Heat one is for smaller dogs, 40 lbs or less; followed by heat two for those pups who are 41 lbs or more; and heat three will be a tandem run for humans with their canine counterparts.

Each participant will have 10 minutes to catch the two best waves out there- scores will be based on confidence level, length of ride, and ability to “grip it and rip it” overall on those two best rides. The awards ceremony will follow the three heats around 1 or 2pm.

Enter the competition online by today (May 20th) for the cost of $50 for divisions 1 or 2 and $55 for division 3 which includes a competition medal and a goodie bag! All proceeds go to resort’s non-profit partner. Boards and assistance throughout the competition will be supplied by the Coronado Surfing Academy. And should your dog win, you’ll win the “ultimate pet vacation” at the Loews Coronado Bay Resort among a ton of other prizes.

General admission is free, so if your pup isn’t quite ready for competition, head out to simply enjoy a Southern California tradition with a twist, the surf competition- featuring Fido.
