Dog Training in Carmel Valley

Absolute K-9 trains dogs for Carmel Valley families from our facility at 11339 Sorrento Valley Rd, a few minutes south. We have been training San Diego dogs since 1994, and more than 10,000 have come through our programs.

Canyon Trails Change What Your Dog Needs

Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve is a short drive from Carmel Valley, and for a lot of households here it is where the dog actually gets walked.

The preserve runs roughly seven miles, from where the I-5 and I-805 merge east to just past the I-15, and covers around 4,000 acres jointly owned by the City and County of San Diego. It is not a manicured park. The city’s own description of the canyon lists mule deer, bobcat, coyote and raccoon among the mammals living there, alongside more than 175 kinds of bird.

City rules require dogs to be leashed on a lead no longer than eight feet on all park trails and canyons. On a narrow canyon path you are managing that lead around mountain bikes, runners and dogs coming the other way. A dog that pulls, lunges, or locks onto something moving in the brush turns that walk into work.

For off-leash time, the nearest approved city site is Torrey Highlands Park on Lansdale Drive, just off Del Mar Heights Road — a one-acre turfed and mulched area open dawn to dusk. It is a good space, but it is one acre and it is fenced. Almost everywhere else around here, your dog is on a leash.

That combination — long leashed trail walks past genuine wildlife, and limited off-leash space — makes loose-leash walking and a dependable “leave it” the two skills Carmel Valley owners get the most use out of.

What We Work On

Board & Train

Daily work with professional trainers, including leash skills and impulse control built against real distractions rather than in a quiet room.

Private Training

One-on-one sessions with you handling the dog, so the trail walk works when you are the one holding the lead.

Puppy Training

Leash manners and impulse control early, before your puppy decides that everything rustling in the brush is worth chasing.

Aggression & Reactivity

Narrow trails mean close passes with other dogs. If that is where things go wrong for you, this is where we start.

Veterinary Care On Site

We share our location with Snug Animal Hospital, so dogs staying with us have veterinary care in the same place. For older dogs, dogs on medication, or anyone nervous about boarding, that is usually the detail that settles it.
